Drilling Down a Niche

Finding profitable niches can be difficult. Finding one that isn’t extremely saturated can be intimidating when you’re just starting out as an Internet marketer. The key to finding niches that are both profitable and have little competition is drilling down a top-level niche to find profitable sub-niches with fewer competitors.

For example, let’s say you’re interested in creating a site that has to do with beauty. You can drill the beauty category down into several different sub-categories. You could choose hair care, skin care, fitness, organic beauty, cosmetics, or any number of niches related to beauty.

But these categories are still too broad to be profitable with small numbers of visitors. You need to drill down further. Let’s say you decide to tackle the skin care demographic. Sub-categories of skin care might include eczema, acne, blackheads, wrinkles, age spots, psoriasis, and dry skin.

Now you have a list of smaller niches that you can begin to narrow down. Acne might still be too broad. You can drill down even more by targeting teenage acne, infant acne, and adult acne.

While you want to find niches that are narrow enough for you to dominate, you don’t want to choose niches that have too little traffic available. Don’t be afraid to spy on your competitors.

Go to your favorite search engine, like Google, and search for things like “how to get rid of acne.” This is obviously a niche desperately seeking a solution. If you drill down too much, like targeting “blackheads,” you might find it’s an annoyance, but maybe not something people are desperate enough to spend money solving.

You should verify that your idea gets a decent level of search volume by using a keyword tool like WordTracker or Google Keyword External. When you look for the niche on Google, see if there are plenty of AdWords ads on the right sidebar of the screen.

If so, this means people are making money in this niche. Any time you can come up with an original slant on an idea that’s already churning profits online, you’re poised for instant success.

If you rally want to get into the eBay niche, don’t go after a broad, eBay for beginners niche. Target something unique such as “eBay Businesses for Baby Boomers.” Pick a specific target audience and then cater to their needs instead of approaching the mass public with a broad idea.

What niche are you trying to get into?

  1. Great reminders !
I like the eBay analogy as I like to sell on eBay and have thought of doing a course but think that it’s too saturated.
    Thanks

    • Rose, even in a saturated market it’s still (though maybe a bit harder) possible to add a different spin and your own unique voice! Don’t give up on your idea yet!

  2. Is there any profit in a niche like “getting closer to God” or “deepening your relationship with God”? I’m not concerned with getting rich or anything, but in making a reasonable hourly wage that will enable me to help in the support of my family. I’m working on a book manuscript to self-publish on Kindle, and I feel led by God to do this, but I don’t know if it’s a topic people will be willing to spend money on.

    • Jen, great question – and I appreciate your heart to share even if there isn’t big money involved! One way that you might make money with this niche is through recommending other products and using affiliate links to do so. Just make sure that the products you’re recommending line up with what you want to share!

  3. I am trying to get into the outdoor living sector. In my pre-website research, I did find that this was an area that wasn’t overly saturated and appeared to be a need for. Hopefully, as I go along, I can tweak it for greater results.

    • Sounds like a great niche, Karen – especially for all of us who are dealing with spring fever right now. It’s fun to dream!

  4. I have been blogging for some time now and have a few blogs. But I have decided to try to focus on only one for now, the subject of my blog is couponing/saving money by using coupons.
It seems to be a very popular topic with women and even men now days…especially in this economy.

  5. I’ve been trying to find my niche in the money saving frugal world which is full of blogs on the same subject but I tried to make mine different by not focusing so much on couponing and focusing more on just simple living and consuming less but then I feel kind of like a hypocrite when i’m telling my readers to avoid the urge to buy buy buy and then I place adds for them to buy things through my blog . Not quite sure what direction to go.

  6. I’ve been blogging about pets for the lats few years and began to feel like a small fish in a very big pond. I decided to niche down a little further and go hyperlocal in the pet niche and gear my content toward pet owners in my area. I’m just getting started but have been thinking about the different opportunities there are to work with organizations and businesses in my area.

  7. I can’t agree more with this post. When I started my first personal blog I could not believe how much our instructor told us to drill down to the smallest most profitable “niche within a niche” is the way it was phrased.
And, I am in a similar situation as one of the earlier commentors on this post. I am in the self-help, spiritual niche and I don’t like to just market products! It is my hope and mission to get the “word” out there but I too need to make a living doing so. It has been a challenge to say the least.
I am just trying to stay authentic and tuned into my own needs so that I can pick products and services that I know will help others.
And, of course doing the analytics on the keywords first is paramount!
Thanks for reminding me of these great pointers on niche selection ;)
